Can You Grow Marijuana With The Same Lamps Used To Heat A Reptile’s Terrarium?
It’s a question in my DAF course. Anybody happen to know if heat bulbs used to maintain high temperatures in a reptile’s habitat are suitable to grow a marijuana plant?

The spectrum which a bulb gives is typically measured in Kelvins; which is typically a unit of temperature. These units are used for fluroscent bulbs.
In the natural environement, in spring the sun gives more blu to red light; in the fall, you get more red-to-blue. This, in combination with light/dark ratios, causes cannabis to flower, as well as causing the breakdown of long chain hydrocarbons in many trees, which is why we see leaves change color.
For optimal growth, a cannabis plant needs 10,000 lumens per square foot. Reptile cage lamps are mostly used for heat and skin production of vitamin D, which is best achieved at the higher 10,500K fluorescent bulbs. Flowering cannabis prefers the 3500K red bulbs in flowering, and the 6500K blue bulbs in vegetative growth. Only the T3 and T5 fluroscent bulbs give sufficient lumen intensity per square foot. This is why most professional cannabis growers utilize High Intensity Discharge lighting, or HID. A 600 watt metal halide (blue) bulb gives off 90,000 lumens, covering 9 sq ft of area, vs a long fluroscent bulb that distributes its lumen intensity over a much larger area and may give less than 6000 lumens per square foot. A 1000w bulb from a good HID manufacturing company yields 150,000 lumens, covering a 15 sq foot area. These HID bulbs are less than a foot long, with a 2×2 reflector, they give the greatest lumen intensity per unit area.

I dont grow marijuana but it depends on the U.V. output. If its a red color I would not think so. It needs to be more of a natural color or it will just burn or scorch the plants. Because heat bulbs just do what there called. Put out heat. Yes Marijuana needs warmth, but not warmth all the time and it dont need to be hot. Most grow up north anyway. The reason why I know this is I took plant growing class’s. We used high pressure sodium bulbs, to get the right U.V. light and temp. Heat bulbs would just hatch bug eggs. LOL. Good luck.

NO they are not suitable you need a balanced spectrum of light towards the blue for veg and red for flower. The reptile bulb will cook them.
If you are on a budget you can use CFL lights get the biggest on available at home depot or wal mart about 100 watts per sq ft.
To flower change the light to 12 on 12 off.
