Do You Think It’s Right For The Government To Make Certain Plants Illegal ?

like marijuana, shrooms, and salvia (in some places)?
They are plants that grow from the ground, so they are meant to be there.

  1. The plants aren’t illegal. It’s illegal for you to do certain things with them.

  2. I agree with both Philip N and Kuf M. Politicians don’t care whether or not it’s “right.” There has to be something in it for them. That’s one reason why pot still isn’t legal, because people keep complaining about it but no one ever tries to get an organized group together and create an interest group, petition, a lobbyist, etc.
…And yes, you are right. It is not right to try to completely annihiliate any living thing off the face of the earth. The government will keep controlling things and abusing its power until it will one day outdo itself and some plant species will become extinct because it was unrightfully labeled as a “drug.” I personally don’t believe anything that naturally grows on the green earth to be a “drug.”

  3. Poisonous toadstools and mushrooms grow from the ground, too. Just because something is from nature, doesn’t mean it’s healthful. And, since people believe that one of government’s duty is the health of its citizens (as with universal healthcare plans, anti-smoking laws, etc.), the government has the right to outlaw plants it deems harmful.

  4. The plants do not commit crimes. The crime is in cultivating or possessing those plants. Poppies also grow in the ground and thus all opiates are also natural. Guns are made from metals that are mined from the ground. That does not prohibit the government from regulating opiates, guns or anything else.

  5. Everyone talks about gov’t did this gov’t did that. It’s a select group of people who are responsible for prohibitions. They complain about these things so loudly and powerfully that elected officials have no choice but to pass laws against them, otherwise they can’t get re-elected. If you want to decriminalize these things, you have to get a powerful enough lobbying group together. It has NOTHING to do with whether there is a right to do it or if it is natural or not. Might makes right.

  6. I don’t mind restrictions on them, doesn’t bother me any. I have to admit though, I find it funny how the public expects and demands that the government look out for the public’s best interest in things such as having no money, therefore depending on the government to protect them through welfare, yet hate the government for trying to protect them from “plants.” Do we want the government in our lives or not?

  7. The government doesn’t even do what it’s mandated to do, let alone regulating my private, peaceful life. No, the government should not prohibit a plant from existing, for crying out loud.
