England & Wales: What Happens If You’re 17 Years Old And Smoking Cannabis?

What if you’re 17 and have a small amount of cannabis or are smoking it and the police catch you with it? Do the warning rules apply if your still only 17? Or is 17 considered old enough now?
If the answer is that you’d be arrested because you’re under 18, what is the age that you no longer have to tell your parents and for them to come in? is it 16 ? 17?
thanks

  1. The general guidelines are that if you are in possession of a very small amount of cannabis then you would most likely receive a caution.
Of course if you have a larger amount you could be charged with possession with intent to supply, the same would apply if you had small amounts in a number of packages.
Age has nothing to do with it because in law it is classed as an illegal substance and it depends on the officer at the time what is done.
The age where parents are informed is usually when the person is under 16,although there are exceptions to this rule which are too many to go through.

  2. It sounds as if you have gone against everything your parents have ever stood for and are now doing something stupid that you know is wrong. Don’t worry about the answer to your question – if you think you’re small enough to smoke cannabis then you’re small enough to take the heat – and you will be a small person as long as you carry on. I wish you luck.

  3. It’s currently illegal in the UK but I don’t know how serious the charge would be. If you were dealing it would probably amount to arrest but you may get off with a warning at the moment, because it’s a class B or C drug, so not like heroin or crack etc…
