How Close (in Actual Time) Is Marijuana To Being Legalized On A National Basis?

I’m just curious how long this form of prohibition will last. I know that marijuana usage has been decriminalized in most states as long as you keep less than an oz. for personal use. I’m just looking for a rough time line (if possible) by someone with background in this area.

  2. It’s hard to say, simply because other events might happen to shape our national and political mood towards drugs.
But at the rate we’re going, I’d say three or four years before all states allow medical marijuana, and seven more years for decriminalization and legalization.
But don’t quote me on this- I don’t have much background. I just know how much of a protest and a fight will be waged by those against pot, and how difficult it will be for politicians who supported the drug wars to suddenly turn around and decriminalize without being called out as hypocrites and flip-floppers. Most would rather take a hard line to be consistent instead of taking up a stance like that.

  3. fact is national legalization or decriminalization will not affect the average private user, so it really doesnt matter. DEA and others are only interested in large scale operations, not someone lighting up in the privacy of their home. It is the states that need to decriminalize it to help out the average stoner. And only very few have actually “decriminalized it” – Mass is the most lax, anything under an Oz is supposed to be given a parking ticket type offense but in reality the cops are just confiscating the weed and not even giving out citations, thats the way it should be. Id be more interested in the legality of weed within the context of state law if i were you

  4. Hopefully soon. Cigarettes are 100 times worse for you and are legal and when we want something better and natural there is no avail. I’d rather smoke something grown from the ground than chemicals.
Sorry I don’t know how close or when but I’m sharing my two cents anyways.
Edit: I agree that if it was legal it would be much easier for marijuana to fall into the wrong hands and people would be using it irresponsibly like if they are driving or cooking or babysitting. While it’s illegal, it’s harder to come across and prevents this (to a certain degree) Yes, it does alter your mind for a short period of time but if you choose to spend that time at home then your doing no harm to anyone. There has been no scientific evidence that marijuana kills brain cells. There is less damage to your lungs and body with marijuana as well…I’ve never smoked a cigarette in my life, but I know people who do and they crave a cigarette once every like hour. I have a joint once in a while… I’m not addicted and could stop at anytime if I wanted to. Marijuana is less addictive and there is not the constant need for it like with cigarettes. If you smoke less, there is going to be less damage. You should read some information on this site about marijuana. There are a lot of myths out there and this site clarifies a lot of them.http://www.drugpolicy.org/marijuana/fact…

  5. Hopefully, it will never be legalized.
It was ILLEGAL for a reason people.
    EDIT: @ Julia
Marijuana is FAR worse than ciggarettes. It kills Brain Cells much faster than ciggarettes. It makes you very high and its dangerous to your mind. Ciggarettes are dangerous too, but we would see ALOT more deaths in the country in Marijuana was legalized. I am basing this on what it can do to your body. Most people are going to say “oh its not bad at all” and “its healthy for you in some ways”. THIS is a LIE.
