Obama would legalize it for medical purposes, but only if it’s determined that marihuana is an effective pain-killer, and only under strict controls so that no one can use it for purposes other than those recommended by doctors. Here’s what Obama told a voter who asked the same question you are asking, as reported by MSNBC in late 2007:
“My attitude is if the science and the doctors suggest that the best palliative care and the way to relieve pain and suffering is medical marijuana then that’s something I’m open to because there’s no difference between that and morphine when it comes to just giving people relief from pain…But I want to do it under strict guidelines. I want it prescribed in the same way that other painkillers or palliative drugs are prescribed.”
Since “other painkillers” are not intended for use as recreational drugs, and Obama wants to treat marihuana the same way as those painkillers, it follows that he does not plan to make marihuana available for recreational purposes.

I don’t know. But….if McCain is elected and he croaks, that leaves us with Palin, and I bet she would legalize it.
